Apprenticeship

Pipeline to the Trades

About the program

In conjunction with Tyler Lane Construction Inc.

This initiative is an innovative and strategic program aimed at providing an internship towards skill-based training and job placement for graduating high school students in Chicago, Illinois.

High School students are not informed of the tremendous opportunities for young workers in the construction industry. Most high school students graduate in May. The majority of union apprenticeship programs start in the fall or winter months. There remains a huge disconnect in between the time students graduate until the time they can attend a union apprenticeship program. It is the unfortunate fact that if some of these students do not begin a program immediately upon graduation, they may be tempted to attain wages in a more unsavory fashion, which will hinder any previous interest in joining a trade. If these students are allowed to experience an internship in the construction industry and they participate for the entire duration, we could potentially save many young men and women from taking the wrong path in life. This program should be a feeder program to the apprenticeship schools.

Program Objectives

1. Increase local workforce commitment to reduce economic hardship

2. To develop pipeline programs that engage students in summer internships and apprenticeships in the construction industry

3. Create youth summer employment, workforce development, and apprenticeship programs to promote careers in construction

4. Form a partnership with the unions and the local school board to ensure contractor participation

5. To provide paid internships and mentoring opportunities for Chicago Public Schools (hereinafter referred to as “CPS”) students from low income neighborhoods

6. To build economic vibrancy and a partnership to increase local hiring, working with local high schools

7. Develop career advancement and growth opportunities to foster local workforce retention
